Wholesale is the quiet middle lane of Amazon sourcing. You skip the daily treasure hunt of arbitrage and the launch risk of private label, and instead buy real brands at distributor prices to sell on listings that already convert. The hard part is not finding products. It is getting a brand or distributor to open an account for an Amazon seller at all. We have opened plenty, and the sellers who get through are the ones who look legitimate, lead with value, and treat the whole thing as a numbers game.
Why brands say no in 2026
Brands have more control over their resellers than ever. Brand Registry gating, Transparency codes, and Project Zero let them decide who sells their catalog, and most have been burned by sellers who tanked prices or let listings rot. So the default answer to "can I open a wholesale account" is no, and that is fine. Treat it as volume work: apply to around fifty suppliers, expect ten to fifteen approvals, and plan on three to five accounts surviving the margin math. Run that math before you order. Our 2026 Amazon fee guide and the per-category fee cheat sheet will tell you in two minutes whether a price list leaves anything behind.
Look like a business brands want to work with
Distributors judge the application before they read it. A registered company, a simple one-page website, and an email address on your own domain will put you ahead of most applicants on their own. A gmail address asking for a price list reads like a hobby, and hobby accounts are what gating exists to filter out. Have your business number and resale documentation ready, because serious distributors will ask, and the speed of your answer is part of the test.
Pitch value, not a price list
The biggest mistake in wholesale outreach is opening with what you want. Brands do not care that you want their price list. They care about their mapped-out pricing being enforced, their listings having decent images and current copy, and their buy box not being a knife fight. So your first message should offer to fix something: flag the violated MAP pricing, the three-year-old main image, the unanswered questions on their listing. We wrote up the exact approach in how to wholesale someone else's brand by providing value, and it still outperforms every template we have tested. Once the account is open, remember that the first terms you are quoted are an opening position. Negotiate everything: payment terms, freight, exclusives on slow movers.
Brand gating and the invoice test
Opening the account is half the job. If the brand is gated on Amazon, your application lives or dies on the invoice, and Amazon is strict about what counts. The invoice needs to come from the manufacturer or an authorized distributor, show at least ten units, be dated within the last ninety days or so, and carry the supplier's full name, address, phone, and website. Your business name and address on it must match your Seller Central details exactly, and it should be a clean scan, not a phone photo. Retail receipts from Walmart, Costco, or even Amazon itself get rejected, because a store receipt proves you bought something, not that the brand wants you selling it. The cleaner alternative is a Letter of Authorization from the brand, which is one more reason the value-first pitch matters: a brand that sees you as a partner will sign one.
Sourcing wholesale from Canada
Canadian sellers have a thinner local bench. The big directories like ThomasNet and Wholesale Central skew heavily American, and most "wholesale suppliers Canada" lists are padding. What actually works: Canadian trade shows, directories that tag Canadian suppliers, US distributors that are happy to ship north, and reverse sourcing, meaning you find a profitable ASIN on Amazon.ca and work backwards to whoever distributes that brand in Canada. Buying from a US distributor and importing the stock yourself is often the best price, and the GST you pay at the border is recoverable money with a few rules attached, which is accountant territory. Ours, Jones and Cosman, handle the import side as part of their Amazon seller accounting work.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get wholesale accounts for Amazon?
Set up a registered business with its own domain and website, then apply in volume to brands and distributors with a value-first pitch instead of a price list request. Expect most to say no. Out of fifty applications, a realistic outcome is ten to fifteen approvals and a handful of accounts worth reordering from.
What makes an invoice valid for brand ungating?
It must come from the manufacturer or an authorized distributor, show ten or more units, be recent, and match your Seller Central business name and address exactly. Retail receipts do not qualify. A Letter of Authorization from the brand works as well and is often easier if the brand already likes you.
Are there wholesale suppliers for Amazon sellers in Canada?
Fewer than in the US, which is the opportunity. Canadian trade shows, supplier directories that tag Canadian companies, US distributors that ship north, and reverse sourcing from Amazon.ca bestsellers all work. Importing US stock yourself is often cheapest once the border costs are handled properly.
